Industry Leaders Gather

By Gene Retske
Industry leaders and gurus, from as far as the UK, gathered in Dallas the week of August 1, and shared ideas and views of the industry. The event was produced by Larry Lockhart and Dan Garza of Black Marlin Multimedia Group, and hosted by Gene Retske of The Prepaid Press and Fedor Smith of ATLANTIC-ACM. There were so many illustrious people and intriguing ideas, that it is hard to provide them all. What follows is a compilation of some of the most memorable comments.

Fedor Smith
VP, ATLANTIC-ACM

“The foundation of the prepaid wireless industry is still simple, minute by minute plans, and that segment of the business will continue to grow providing prices do not plummet. However, the real opportunity for growth and increased margins will be MVNO brands that offer advanced features and appealing plans that attract mid range and even higher end users. Sensible pricing and appealing products/features will draw desirable customers and encourage longer customer lifecycles.”

Paris Holt

CEO, TelSPACE

“Wireless prepaid’s future success is dependent upon attaining a balance between the ability to deliver rich content differentiation to its customers and the purity and loyalty of its distribution strategy.”

Assaf Baciu
Sr. Product Manager, BeVocal

“In today’s fast moving environment, with customer life cycles being what they are, you do not get many chances to sell additional services. You need to maximize every opportunity to sell customers products and service. We are trying to transform the way carriers interact with their customers, so you get all the same service and interaction with using IVR, SMS or WAP. You try to create a marketing channel. You take the interaction and serve the customer and then automatically provide a marketing message.”

Simon Pollack
VP of Carrier Relations, dotMobi

“Mobile customers expect a good Internet experience where they can purchase good qualitative content at a price they feel comfortable with. DotMobi enables sites that will be built to deliver on this.”

Alan Bugos
VP Advanced Technology, iBasis

“Voice over IP Networks are here to stay. The Internet is here to stay. They are leveraging lots of different resources. You can increase your efficiency and lower your costs of providing services.”

Paul Whitaker
Head of Game Sales, North American Nokia

“Games are going to get bigger. Games are going to get better. There are 65 million color screens in the hands of mobile phone users with accelerated hardware graphics, waiting for the perfect game.”
